Remember our topic is freehand drawing. From the word itself, one is free to choose any kind of materials available on a desk. Anyway, you can use the following mentioned. I have also included the materials used for oil painting, water color , ink and charcoal rendering for your further info.
Materials for SKETCHING
15" x 20", 1/8" thick sanded, plywood (varnished if you want), or laminated with formica. This is more comfortable to use than a table. You can put it on your lap and feel free to sit anywhere, indoor or outdoor.
Pencil (F, HB, B, 2B, E), or soft charcoal
Erasers, kneaded eraser
Any pen, ballpoint pen, sign pen, technical pen
Sketch pad, eggshell paper, illustration boards, or just plain bond papers
Paper stump, tissue paper or if you want, you can use your fingers to smudge the pencil lead
STIPPLING (POINTILLISM) - is an ink rendering technique done by doing small, small dots until achieving a form and shade. It is a tedious and taxing method. This needs careful handling of technical pen (or you will ruin its expensive tip!) perpendicular to the paper. See this sample which I rendered using technical pens.
